Shaker Village - Sept 15

ICOLSE will be hosting an Evening at the Shaker Community that will begin with a Sunset Guided Tour of the Shaker Barn, Brick Dwelling, and Water Turbine (all of which are full of inventive technology). A typical Shaker Supper, starting with time to chat over cheese and crackers, will follow; dietary substitutes are available by advanced request. There will be entertainment at the end of the meal consisting of Shaker music discussed and demonstrated by Village interpreters

Also check out a local newspaper article about the Shaker Village special event dining services.

EPRI High Voltage Facility Tour - Sept (TBD)

Tour of the Electric Power Research Institute High Voltage Facility.  From traditional research on lightning protection for the power grid, to testing new devices that consumers may someday use to manage their energy consumption in realtime, EPRI's labs provide world class capabilities for testing, experiments and technology-application research.

LTI Lightning Lab - Sept 16

Tour of the Lightning Technologies Inc - Lightning Lab, one of the world's most complete simulated-lightning test laboratories.  The electrical characteristics of the different types of lightning flashes, and the resulting surges and fields from a strike, are complex. Engineers have found that to study the effects of lightning upon a structure or system, it is most efficient to isolate the components of the lightning waveforms and electrical/magnetic fields and to evaluate their effects through individual simulations. The lab at LTI includes specialized and unique equipment to simulate all the electrical characteristics of natural lightning as well as the transients it induces in electrical and electronic systems.

Optional Day Activities for Accompanying Partners.

These tours are not included in conference registration.  Please see Registration Form for cost and schedule.  They are subject to cancellation if insufficient registrations received.

The Mount and Rockwell Art Museum - Sept (TBD) ($75*)

The Mount was the home of Pulitzer-prize winning author Edith Wharton, who designed the house and gardens with the same intelligence and sensitivity that distinguishes her writing.

Norman Rockwell Museum houses the world's largest and most significant collection of original Rockwell art. Highlights include enduring favorites from Rockwell's Saturday Evening Post covers, the powerful Four Freedoms, and the nostalgic Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas. The Norman Rockwell Archive contains more than 100,000 photographs, letters, and other rare mementos.

Clark Art Institute and Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art - Sept (TBD) ($75*)

Clark Art Institute - In 1950 Sterling and Francine Clark chartered the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute as a home for their extensive art collection. Opened to public in 1955, the Institute has built upon this extraordinary group of works to become one of the most beloved and respected art museums in the world, known for its intimate galleries and stunning natural environment. One of the few institutions in the United States that combines a public art museum with a complement of research and academic programs, including a major art history library, the Clark is now a leading international center for research and discussion on the nature of art and art history.

MASS MoCA - Since opening in 1999, MASS MoCA has become one of the world's premier centers for making and showing the best art of our time. With annual attendance of 120,000, it ranks among the most visited institutions in the United States dedicated to new art. More than 80 major new works of art and more than 50 performances have been created through fabrication and rehearsal residencies in North Adams, making MASS MoCA perhaps the most fertile site in the country for new art. The museum thrives on making and presenting work that is fresh, surprising, and challenging.
